We seriously doubt that Glenn Danzig intended his 1988 song “Mother” to be an unofficial anthem for Mother’s Day, but some of us ran with it. Happy MOTHER!!!!

Every week Spotify comes up with a list for its users (I’m assuming all of them), based on listening preferences. It’s 30 songs.  I haven’t done the math, but I usually take about 25%-30%, discard the rest.   This week is consistent, 7 songs.   Mostly boppy stuff with some Sonic Youth and Wavves thrown in.   But the highlight is The Jones Girls nugget from 1979- “You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else”. Hello Ladies!

We start off with the new Radiohead (you can see the stunning video below the playlist), and then some new tracks from M83.  From there we turn it backwards with the Doobies, and then fluctuate toward the end of the last decade with Kasabian, TV on the Radio, MGMT and Ghostland Observatory.   For the last three we’ve got Kamera, from Wilco and one awesome 2001 album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yankee_Hotel_Foxtrot), and end up with Kendrick Lamar and Tame Impala. Enjoy!

Here’s what you need to know:

  1. This song is poppy and disco but has an undercurrent below it that it will beat you down mercilessly if it had to. Listen to the group vocals in the chorus, does this sound like a group of guys you want to f**k with? .
  2. The bass line.  The late Louis Johnson (a Brother) KILLS THIS!!!    I wish I could take the credit for playing bass on this, to stand up point to the speaker and say “I did that”.  It’s that good.
  3. I have never played this song without my day getting significantly better.
  4. The video for this is below, where there is dancing.  I would love to have been there, or in a club when this song was smoking hot.  Truthfully, though, I’d be standing in the corner with a cocktail, but still……….

Info about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stomp!

The artist is Brothers Johnson: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Brothers_Johnson

Stomp! is probably the Brothers biggest crossover hit (pop / disco), though hardcore fans would point to the R&B classics of Strawberry Letter 23 and Get The Funk Out My Face

Here is the video, where said dancing occurs.

Below are five million words on why TV on the Radio is one of the best American bands of the last 10 years.

Kidding. I’ll give you just enough and then let you tell me.

1  Read this for a primer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TV_on_the_Radio. This is a great synopsis of the band. No need for me to regurgitate.

2. Below is 30 songs, 2 hours of music spanning their first release, an EP titled “Young Liars” in 2003 to their last release, “Seeds” in 2014.

3. Two cents. Tv on the Radio changes it up on each album, within each album and sometimes even within a song. They want to rock. They want to groove. Sometimes they want you to just listen to a song real loud. There are at least ten songs that can be inserted into an Oscar quality movie and would fit nicely.  Their music would make a great edition of “Laser TV on The Radio” at the local planetarium.  Finally, great bands have the ability to generate fans who listen for different reasons. My favorite song is “Halfway Home” and not many have heard it (you can ask ten fans and it may not make any of their top ten). Hell, many might ditch my playlist and come up with an entirely different one.

Great bands let us engage how we want, and this is one of them. Enjoy.
